Please Would You Sell It To Me?
Blog

Some things money cannot buy. And I don't have the kind of money to convince anyone that I would buy it at all costs. I just don't have that kind of money.

In February 2017, whilst crafting the draft of our blog, I was disappointed to know that www.appliedriskmanagement.com had already been taken. I convinced myself that it would be worth it to buy it over. But when it came to naming the figure, to be honest, I struggled hard, and very reluctantly, I told myself that I would set aside $10,000 to buy it from the current owner. To me, $10,000 is a lot to pay for a website (or for anything, unless I can pay for it in instalments).

Grab Name ARM com

What about $30,000? $30,000 for a website name? What about more than that? Who can guarantee the success of Anthony's blog at $50,000 price tag? What a risky investment!

The website developer boss tried to break the bad news gently to me saying that the current owner had owned the domain since Year 1999, and it was unlikely that he would want to sell it, or that he would forget to renew it in time.

I was obsessed with having a .com without knowing why. Do you, my dear reader, also think that I should have bought the .com no matter what? Did you wonder why Victory had an .org instead of .com when you were searching for us earlier? How much do you think I should have offered to pay the existing owner back then?

I Googled for answers to write this post, and I found out the risks for not making .com happen:

(1) .com is a top level domain and is the best domain extension for Search Engine Optimization SEO (novanym.com)

(2) .com might indirectly rank higher due to Google's preference for aged brands. ... might indirectly provide more search value. (blog.hubspot.com)

(3) .com domain name is better, more memorable, and less confusing to consumers (wired.com)

Another thing that I found out, as I write this post, is that GoDaddy has a domain appraisal service. Amazing the information that one can find off the internet! As of today, www.appliedriskmanagement.com has an estimated value of USD1,798, and www.appliedriskmanagement.org USD680. We pay about $60 per year to keep the domain name. So if I were to do a simplistic appreciation calculation:

  • .com since Year 1999 =  USD1,798 value now - (USD20 cost per year *22 years) = net appreciation $62 per year
  • .org since Year 2017 =  USD680 value now - (USD20 cost per year*4 years) = net appreciation $150 per year

It only shows me that whatever the extension, it will not make me seriously rich to achieve my big dreams, LOL! It also shows me the risk of not knowing the tools available to find out the worth of an investment, before buying it. Whew, it's just as well that I did not pay $10,000! For now, I am better off coming up with the wild idea that the universe has been waiting for. The "time now" is now
