Learn how risk appetite helps in handling uncertainty, controlling risks, making effective decisions, and growing sustainably without exposing its resources.
In any business endeavor, there will always be some degree of risk that is associated with growth, competition, and success in achieving the objectives or strategy. Business firms venture into markets, develop products, integrate new technologies, and make investments without having complete certainty. Risk involves making choices on what risks to embrace, mitigate, and ignore.
Risk appetite helps the management to make appropriate decisions regarding resource allocation, asset protection, and financial stability. Moreover, having a well-defined approach will help employees know the extent of decision-making they can undertake.
An organization taking too few risks loses some opportunities. An organization taking too many risks risks losing money, facing various fines and penalties, disruption of the normal functioning, and damage to its reputation. Risk appetite provides organizations with the ability to strike a balance between opportunities and risk-taking.

A risk assessment is a systematic process whereby hazards are determined, their probabilities of occurrence evaluated, the magnitude of the damage estimated, and controls established. A risk assessment can be done using five simple steps:
Identification of the hazards
Determining who or what can be affected by the hazards
Assessing the probability and magnitude of the hazard to determine the risk
Establishing the controls to eliminate or minimize the risk
Recording and documenting the findings
These steps apply in any risk management field such as health, financial, operational, IT, supply chain, and compliance.
